It has been that time of year again… Time for the Amazing Race! We have been reading, writing, and listening about the regions of the United States, and students are solidifying their knowledge by travelling to all 5 regions… all within our classroom! / Es el momento del año que hemos esperado… ¡La carrera asombrosa! Hemos leido, escrito, y escuchado acerca de las regiones de los Estados Unidos, y los estudiantes aprendieron aún más por viajar a las 5 regiones… ¡sin dejar nuestro salón! 

Here students are “harvesting fruit” in the fruit field of California. Above is a fruit and vegetable language matching challenge and below is a method of separating pomegranate seeds from the outer peel using density.  / Aquí los estudiantes estan cosechando fruta en los granjeros de California. Arriba es el desafío de clasificar lenguaje de fruta y vegetales. Abajo es un método científico que separa las semillas de la granada de la cascara usando la densidad. 

Students used maps to calculate distances between destinations. / Los estudiantes usaron mapas para calcular distancias entre destinaciones. 

Then on to New Orleans, Louisiana, for our own Mardi Gras parade! Pictured below is a mini parade float and costume capes. / ¡Luego fuimos a Nueva Orleans, Luisiana, para nuestro proprio desfile de Mardi Gras! Las fotos abajo contienen una carroza miniatura y unas capas de los disfraces. 

We spent some time in Arizona weaving rugs like the Navajo Native Americans. / Pasamos un tiempo en Arizona para tejer alfombras con los indígenas navajo. 

Then we journeyed back north to explore skyscrapers in Midwest cities. / Viajamos de nuevo al norte para explorar rascacielos en las ciudades de la region medio oeste. 

 

Students’ favorite challenges were the math problems involving measurement conversions because they could earn a lot of points. / Los desafíos favoritos fueron los problemas de matemáticas que involucraron convertir medidas porque podían ganar muchos puntos. 

United States puzzles were a popular option for teams that finished the challenges early. / Una opción popular para los equipos que terminaron temprano era las rompecabezas de los Estados Unidos. 

 

Whew! The Amazing Race has been a blast this year! Not pictured above are also a White House blueprint sort in Washington, D.C., a shopping excursion at The Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota, and our very own Iditarod race in Juneau, Alaska. / ¡Guau! La carrera asombrosa ha sido mucha diversión este año! Las fotos no muestran todas las aventuras. También fuimos a la Casa blanca en Washington, D.C., hicimos compras en el Mall de América en Bloomington, Minnesota, y tuvimos nuestra propia carrera Iditarod en Juneau Alaska.

Speech practice time! 21st century skills our students definitely need include public speaking. We practiced “mini-speeches” regularly in our classroom using sentence frame supports and clear objectives. Here the objective is “to state a prediction”. Students predicted what U.S. state their partner would most like to visit and why. The partner then had the chance to answer why or why not they would want to travel there. / ¡Listos para practicar el discurso! Una destreza del siglo XXI que nuestros estudiantes necesitan incluye el hablar enfrente de un público. Practicamos discursos cortos con mucha frecuencia en nuestro salón usando marcos de oración y objectivos claros. Aquí el objectivo es — afirmar una predicción –. Los estudiantes predijeron acerca de un compañero cual estado en los EE.UU. le gustaría visitar. El compañero tuvo la oportunidad de responder si le gustaría o no le gustaría viajar a tal estado.

What do you get when you have a water-catching prototype and a snowstorm? Of course, you have some scientific thinkers! Students had limited resources to construct their models, and then we set out into the chilly wind to test them out! / ¿Qué tienes con un prototipo para atrapar agua y una tormenta de nieve? Claro, ¡tienes unos científicos! Los estudiantes tuvieron pocos recursos para construir los modelos , y luego salimos en el viento frio para probarlos. 

After catching our snow, we measured it using varying sizes of cups (1/2, 1/4, and 1/8). What a great way to practice adding fractions with unlike denominators! / Después de atrapar la nieve, la medimos con varios tamaños de tazas (1/2, 1/4, and 1/8). ¡Que buena manera de practicar sumando  fracciones con denominadores diferentes! 

We had some slushy puddles to clean up in our classroom! Well worth it 😉 / Tuvimos unos charcos para limpiar en nuestro salón. Valió la pena 🙂
